Bernhard Ehrenfied east side view / before treatment
Surface evidences heavy biological growth (lichens and moss) concentrating on the pedestal area and capital of headstone.

Although some of the epitaph had been mechanically removed (vandalised) lettering is distinct and legible. Headstone’s surface is smooth and retains good physical cohesion. Visible crack running parallel to lettering.

Infilling of surface loss to epitaph and re-lettering. Both treatments are reversible

Biological growth (lichens and moss). Structural crack extending from top of the capital through epitaph area. Minor surface loss to selective areas (letters) of the epitaph. Previous cement based repairs to friezes.

Removal of previous repairs. Steam cleaning. Rebuild of friezes and other architectural elements. Infilling of cracks and surface losses. Re-lettering. Repointing of joints.

Stone’s surface is ‘sugary’ and crumbles when touched. Extensive surface losses to epitaph. Lettering is mostly illegible.
