Before treatment / sculpture representing a youth
Marble surface shows ingrained dust and grime. Surface losses to shield and plinth. Missing elements such as toes. Two large holes have been previously drilled possibly to facilitate transporting of sculpture.

After treatment / detail: surface cleaning was achieved by using a steam cleaner. Surface losses to the nose, lips and hair were in filled with a CaCO3 based putty.

Marble surface shows ingrained dust and grime. Cracks associated  with structural holes. Tip of cornucopia is missing as well as left hand. Extensive surface losses to drape and plinth.  

Before treatment / approximately ten metal pins were fixed to the surface with cement. Pins were corroded and surrounding marble surface showed oxidation.

After treatment / detail: rebuild of tip of cornucopia and reattachment of new carved hand. Research focused on determining hands position and attribute (s) lead to similar replicas found at AMP buildings in New Zealand and Australia. These replicas were used as a reference in sculpting a new hand.

General view before treatment: whole monument is heavily soiled and shows  biological growth concentrating on the plinth area. Limestone surface is weathered and some areas are missing or have lost detail. Monument has been extensively repaired with an incompatible mortar.

General view (onsite): fountain sustained severe damage due to car crash causing structural collapse of all its elements.

Before treatment / detail: underside of capital is broken (loose) Capital has been extensively repaired with the inclusion of several Dutchman stone patches. Some of these additions are unlevelled and there is conspicuous and excess adhesive at joints.

After treatment /detail: steam cleaning. Reattachment of underside of capital. Removal of excess adhesive. Infilling of joints and surface losses.

Before treatment: surface is heavily soiled (biological growth). All column pedestals evidence considerable damage to the topside area. One of the pedestals is broken into multiple fragments.

After treatment (on site): steam cleaning. Infilling / rebuild  of surface losses. Resetting of all elements.

Marble surface is stained and shows a thick layer of grime and grease. Structurally, pointing between bust and pedestal is missing causing some movement between the two elements. Tip of the nose is missing.

Cement accretions are visible at pedestal and hair areas. Minor surface abrasion to the hair and tiara.

During treatment / detail: tests were carried out to determine cleaning method. Steam cleaning was considered the most effective at gradually and evenly removing the soiling.

After treatment: A mold was taken from the nose and a cast, similar in apparence to marble, was made and consequently attached to the nose.

Although some of the epitaph had been mechanically removed (vandalised) lettering is distinct and legible. Headstone’s surface is smooth and retains good physical cohesion. Visible crack running parallel to lettering.

After treatment / general view: a combination of steam and solvent cleaning was applied to minimize the layer of anti graffiti. Previous joint repair (mortar) was removed and surface losses were in filled and colour matched. This is a reversible process that can be undone if necessary.

After treatment / detail:  surface was consolidated and infilled to prevent water collecting and further weathering of the inter-granular micro fissures. This conservation process is entirely reversible.

Before treatment: although sculpture surface retains good detail and texture, ingrained soiling, stains and black accretions along with biological growth are visible. Structurally, the top half of the sculpture became detached from the body due to vandalism.
